LAC. Wallace Jackson in North Africa and Italy with 70 Squadron, RAF, 1941-1944
|
Wallace Jackson joined the RAF at the age of 17 in 1938,
training as a ground crew mechanic. After short spells at
Henley, Croydon, and Tangmere, he joined 47 Squadron, at Kabrit, Egypt,
in 1940. However, the greater part of his active service as
624508 LAC. Wallace Jackson was with the ground crew of B Flight, 70
Squadron, maintaining the Vickers Wellington bomber in North
Africa and later, Italy. He returned
to England in 1944 with brief periods at Warmwell and Lympne
before leaving the service at the close of hostilities with the rank of
corporal.
These are photographs and souvenirs surviving from this time, principally with 70 Squadron. Such details as are available have been included with the items. Although the collection contains contact prints of varying quality, all have been included. The internet has proved an important medium for the sharing of such material and we hope that it will be of interest.
Contributions and enquiries received so far can be found in the contacts section.
