George Steel served as ground crew in North Africa and shares several of the photographs and other material with comrades who are recorded on this website.   In 1944 he was "mentioned in dispatches".

In November 1940, 70 Squadron sent a number of Wellington bombers to assist the Greeks repel the Italian invasion from Albania, operating from Menidi and Eleusis airfields near Athens.   These photographs from a section of G. Steel's album focusing on Athens seem to indicate he was part of the ground crew involved.   Athens fell to the Germans in April 1941 and was not liberated until October 1944.
